GEHL ARCHITECTS WINS URBAN DESIGN COMPETITION

21.11.2011 Together with Mirvac, Studio53 and Roberts Day, we have won a competition to design a new city center for the town of Karratha, Australia

Together with Mirvac, Studio53 and Roberts Day, we have won a competition to design a new city center for the town of Karratha, Australia, which over the next decades will grow from from 10.000 to 50.000 inhabitants, due to its mining possibilities. Using the GEHL Architects methodology LIFE – SPACE – BUILDINGS, our approach to the Place Making Strategy and Master Plan have been informed by an understanding of the local community. A sense of place and attachment must relate to both the indigenous and non-indigenous people of Karratha. Just as the natural environment has provided shelter, shade and food for the Aboriginal people of the community, the urban environments also form complex living environments, which support life, activity and vibrancy. Our design solutions have sought to integrate the design of the buildings and the urban spaces to create environments which prioritizes life, urban quality, health, safety and an inclusive environment for all.
