New York City Mayor Bloomberg announces that the pilot projects on Broadway, which have been a part of Gehl Architects strategy for the city, are to become permanent.
New York City Mayor, Michael Bloomberg, announces that the pilot projects on Broadway, that have been carried out by the Department of Transportation of New York City, are to become permanent. The number of pedestrians traveling along Broadway and 7th Avenue in Times Square increased by 11% and stationary activities have increased by 84% in the busiest locations (34th and 44th Streets). During the pilot project injuries to motorists and passengers in the project area are down 63%, pedestrian injuries are down 35%. Travel times for motorists have improved up to 17%. 74% of New Yorkers surveyed agree that Times Square has improved dramatically. And in this day and age, if you go around the world, all the other great cities have already tried to reduce the number of cars on their streets and convert some of the open spaces into space for other people.”
