NYC AWARD PRESENTED TO JAN GEHL

An award for ”exceptional contribution to New York City Streetscape and the Public Realm” has been presented to Jan Gehl by New York City’s commisioner for Transport, Janette Sadik-Khan.During the past two and a half years, Gehl Architects has been a consultant for NYC to enhance the quality of the urban environment. In just two years, 750 km (approx 450 miles) of bicycle paths have been established, many sidewalks have been widened and new squares established. The contribution by Gehl Architects was honored with the award that was presented to Jan Gehl in NYC at a ceremony, October 7, 2009.Several bloks of Broadway have been closed to vehicle traffic, which has enabled the creation of new plazas on Times Square, Herald Square and Madison Square. A bicycle culture is steadily developing and the new squares have been received with enthusiasm by both New Yorkers as well as tourists.>> Read press release (in Danish only)
