GEHL ARCHITECTS WIN UK CIVIC AWARD

18.03.2009 Gehl Architects have been awarded one of the prestigious UK Civic Trust Awards for the Brighton New Road project.

Gehl Architects have been awarded one of the prestigious UK Civic Trust Awards for the Brighton New Road project. Launched in 1959, the Civic Trust Awards is one of the oldest built environment award schemes in Europe. The awards recognize the best in the built environment, from architecture to planning, townscape to infrastructure and are based on the belief that development should be for the benefit of people – those who use it, and those who just pass by. About the New Road project the Civic Trust emphasize that “by adopting the concept of a shared space the scheme has transformed a traditional, motorist dominated street scene incorporating rigid features such as kerbs and crossings into one where pedestrians are able to move freely over the whole area and have priority over other users. (…) Local people were involved in the design process through a series of workshops and it is clear that the scheme has improved the experience for many people who use it.”Read the Civic Trust assessment of the New Road project here.
